Loleta Elementary School recently started a running club through the Boys & Girls Club of the Redwoods.
The club, which consists of students in grades K-8 and school alumni, has been actively training and members were recently able to challenge themselves by participating in the third annual “Jim Davy Tour of Loleta Fun Run” at Swauger Station Days.
The students, who were sponsored by St. Joseph Health System’s Loleta Community Resource Center through its Healthy for Life program, ran or walked a 2.2 mile course during the event.
St. Joseph Health System launched the Healthy for Life campaign in 2008 to fight childhood obesity. This comprehensive social and health care outreach initiative was designed to fight the childhood obesity epidemic that plagues an estimated nine million American children, with Hispanic and Native American children having the highest rates of childhood obesity than other ethnicities.
The campaign focuses on getting kids and their families to develop healthy lifestyle choices by incorporating both physical activity and a responsible diet.
For more information about the Healthy for Life program, call Loleta Community Resource Center coordinator Marina Cortez-Hash at 707-845-0464.
